A Second Chance: Learning About Overdose Prevention

Kea and her older brother Thabo have always been close. He looks out for her and helps her navigate life. Lately Thabo has been struggling, and Kea starts noticing things are not quite right. This is a story about recognising the signs of an overdose and knowing what to do.

Scene 1: Noticing the signs

Scene 1: Noticing the signs
Kea walks into Thabo's room. He is half-asleep, breathing slowly.

He mumbles but does not properly respond.

Kea

“Hey, Thabo, are you okay?”

Thabo

“…mmh.”

The next day, she overhears his friends.

Kea feels uneasy. She remembers reading that opioids slow down breathing, and that high amounts can be fatal.

Friend

“That new batch is strong, you just have to be careful with the dose.”

What should Kea do next?
