Support. Don't Punish Activities! Part 2: Liberia
SSDP United Methodist University - Monrovia
Written by Ewelle Sylvester Williams
On Monday, June 27, 2022, we hosted a workshop with people who use drugs (PWUD) and key actors on two major concerns: 1. Rehabilitation Centers, and 2. Harm reduction Coalition for Liberian PWUD who are often referred to as zogos. We then participated in a funds drive event to support PWUD present at our event. We thought it wise to engage PWUD and major actors in order to see a vivid exchange of understanding. The Coalition of Liberia Harm Reduction will be headed by West African Drug Policy Network (WADPN) Chapter Liberia along with United Methodist University Students for Sensible Drug Policy, PLAN Liberia and the Liberian Drug Enforcement Agency. Prior to the event, the coalition had developed a Liberian Harm Reduction Leaflet, one of the first of its kind, which you can see here. As a result of SSDP and other Support. Don't Punish advocacy efforts across the country, the Liberian Government, alongside some United Nations bodies and other stakeholders, have begun raising funds to support young people who use drugs who are living on the street.
